Breaking Xu Renxiu's record! The team captured the cuteness of "Taiwanese endemic species" in one night

Xu Renxiu, a 50-year ecological photography veteran, has no plans for adventure: Even if he writes a will, he will survive and continue to travel

(Press release July 15)

Xu Renxiu, an important promoter of ecological conservation in Taiwan and a pioneer of ecological photography, has made his first appearance on the big screen with his personal life journey as the protagonist! The documentary "I Had a Dream in the Wilderness" is exclusively sponsored by the Media Creative Humanities Foundation and directed by director Shen Keshang, who won the Taipei Film Festival's Million-Dollar Award. It took 6 years to shoot, spanning the mountains and forests of Taiwan and the Amazon rainforest, and condensed Xu Renxiu's profound gaze on nature and his spirit of running in the wilderness for many years into a film with extremely poetic visual language.

Director Shen Keshang and his photography team went deep into nature with Xu Renxiu to record his six-year journey of protecting nature with images, words and actions for more than 50 years. "Nature cannot be fully described in a lifetime. It takes several lifetimes to understand its richness. Hard work is the greatest happiness." This passage at the beginning of the documentary is the best annotation Xu Renxiu left for his passion.

Xu Renxiu was born in Qionglin Township, Hsinchu. He grew up in the countryside and was exposed to the rhythm of nature. He also developed a good skill in catching fish and insects. Now he takes students to the mountains for guided tours. He is still very agile and can easily catch a cute little mountain mouse, which makes the audience exclaim. With his humorous and vivid explanation, everyone not only feels the charm of nature, but also gains a lot of cold knowledge. He shared an interesting observation that sambar deer often quietly approach the campsite. The reason is that it is cold and freezing in the mountains at night. Some campers will relax outside the tent. During the day, they will be dried by the sun and produce salt. In order to replenish sodium, sambar deer will approach these "salt fields" to lick, forming a wonderful and real natural interaction.

Seeing the world through Xu Renxiu's eyes, director Shen Keshang also wrote on Facebook: "In the past, people went into the mountains and forests for a purpose, just to take a good shot and then left; this time, going into the mountains and forests is more like a state that will continue to appear in life." They shot all the way from the suburbs of the city to the Amazon rainforest. Facing the ever-changing world, they waited patiently for a long time just to record the moment of surprise. They waited until the early morning one night and finally took a picture of the cute long-haired goat, a species unique to Taiwan, eating. Xu Renxiu said: "You are very lucky. I probably looked for it at least 30 times before I took the picture." Recalling this countless amazing journey, the director also shared: "What a great journey of turning from an adult into a child."

At the end of the film, Seo In-su left a message, "Going deep into nature never comes from a deliberate big plan, but rather a passion to continue to travel even if I have written a will.", "As long as you embrace love and romance, leave your comfort zone, and explore, you can always start from the land beneath your feet." This shows his lifelong awe and love for nature.

"I Had a Dream in the Wilderness" was produced by Qiri Impression and exclusively sponsored by VideoCreation Humanities Foundation; the poster was designed by well-known designer Chen Shichuan, with Xu Renxiu standing on the grass with a single-lens camera and concentrating as the main visual, which caused discussion in the social network as soon as it appeared.

In order to allow more young people and education sites to experience this work that is both beautiful and meaningful, the team launched a ticket fundraising plan through the crowdfunding platform "WaBay", inviting teachers and students from all over Taiwan to go to the theater from August 22 to watch "I Dreamed a Dream in the Wilderness" to feel the call from the wilderness and find the rhythm of their hearts.
